Games built for the five-minute gap

Games built for the five-minute gap

Not every good mobile game is a good commute game. Some demand setup time, long loading, or a mental state you can't summon in a bus queue. The best short-session games meet you where you are.

The key traits are fast boot, instant resume, and no punishment for quitting mid-run. Endless arcade games nail this by design, but even casual puzzlers like Legends of Slots qualify because a single board is self-contained.

I keep a little folder of these on my home screen for exactly this reason. When I've got a few idle minutes I don't want to decide, I just tap and play.

The trap to avoid is games that use that short loop to drip-feed waiting timers. Those aren't short-session games, they're nag machines dressed up as one.
